How to link a Whatsapp device

You can use WhatsApp on up to four linked devices at once without the need to keep your phone connected. You can only have one phone linked at a time.

Link a device

Open WhatsApp Web or Desktop on the device you want to link.

How to add or remove your WhatsApp account from Portal

Add your account

Note: If you decide to add your WhatsApp account, your contacts aren’t shared with Facebook, but instead are stored on the Portal device.

  1. On your Portal, tap or select Settings > Accounts > your name > Connect WhatsApp. You’ll see a code you’ll need to use to log in to Facebook.
  2. Open facebook.com/device on your phone or computer browser. If you’re using your:
    • Phone: Tap ENTER CODE. Enter the code, then tap CONTINUE > Confirm.
    • Computer: Enter the code, then click Continue > Confirm.
  3. On your Portal, check By checking, you agree to receive messages from Portal on WhatsApp.
  4. Tap or select Continue > Next.
  5. Open WhatsApp on your phone.
    • Android: Tap More options > Linked Devices > LINK A DEVICE. Follow the on-screen instructions if your device has biometric authentication. If you don’t have biometric authentication enabled, you’ll be prompted to enter the pin you use to unlock your phone.
    • iPhone: Go to WhatsApp Settings > tap Linked Devices > Link a Device > OK. On iOS 14 and above, use Touch ID or Face ID to unlock. If you don’t have biometric authentication enabled, you’ll be prompted to enter the pin you use to unlock your phone.
  6. Use your phone to scan the QR code on your Portal.
  7. On your Portal, tap or select Done.

Remove your account

  1. On your Portal, tap or select Settings > Accounts > your name > WhatsApp > Remove Account.

  3. Open the individual chat with “Portal from Facebook” to view the confirmation code that was sent.
  4. On your Portal, enter the confirmation code, then tap or select Done > Remove.

How to call a WhatsApp contact on Portal

To call a WhatsApp contact on Portal, you must have WhatsApp open or running in the background on your mobile phone.

Make a call

  1. On your Portal, tap or select All Contacts or Contacts > WhatsApp.
    • You need to make at least one call for All Contacts to appear. Furthermore, All Contacts is unavailable on Portal TV.
  2. Find, then tap or select the contact you want to call.
  3. Tap or select:
    • Audio if you want to make a voice call
    • Video if you want to make a video call

Answer a call

  • Tap or select Answer to accept the call.
  • Tap or select Not Now to decline the call.
Note:
  • If you want to make a group call, tap or select during the call. Find, then tap or select another contact you want to add. Tap or select Call. A total of four participants can be on a group call. However, if a call is started from WhatsApp on an Android phone or iPhone, you can have a total of eight participants, including yourself.
  • If you want to hide a contact, tap or select All Contacts or Contacts > WhatsApp > the contact you want to hide > > Hide Contact > Hide.
    • If you want to unhide a contact you’ve hidden, tap or select Settings > Privacy > Hidden WhatsApp Contacts. Open WhatsApp on your phone or WhatsApp Web or WhatsApp Desktop on your computer. Then open the individual chat with “Portal from Facebook” to view the confirmation code that was sent. On your Portal, enter the confirmation code, then tap or select Done > Unhide next to the contact you want to unhide.
    • If you want to hide a suggested or recent contact from Home on your Portal, you can press and hold the contact you want to hide, then tap or select . Currently, there’s no option to unhide a suggested or recent contact.
    • Hiding a contact only hides the contact on your Portal and isn’t the same as blocking a contact on WhatsApp. Hidden contacts won’t be able to call your Portal and you won’t be able to call them.

Switch from a voice call to a video call

  1. While on a voice call, tap or select .
  2. The contact you’re voice calling will see a request to switch to a video call and can accept or decline the switch.

  1. While on a video call, tap or select , which will notify the contact you’re video calling that you’ve turned off your camera.
  2. Once the contact turns their camera off, the call will be switched to a voice call.

  1. Open WhatsApp.

  3. Create a status update on: Android | iPhone
  4. You have two sharing options based on if you want to share a new or old status update:
    • Share new status update: Under My status, tap Share to Facebook Story. If prompted, tap Allow or Open to open the Facebook app. In the Facebook app, select the audience you want to share with, then tap Share Now. Please note the Share to Facebook Story option disappears once you go to another tab.
    • Share old status update: Tap My Status on iPhone or More by My status on Android. Next, tap More ( or ) next to the status update you want to share, then tap Share to Facebook. If prompted, tap Allow or Open to open the Facebook app. In the Facebook app, select the audience you want to share with, then tap Share Now.
  5. After you share your status update, WhatsApp will reopen.
Note:
  • If you have multiple status updates, you can choose which updates you want to share to Facebook Stories.
  • This feature is only available if you have one of the following apps installed on your device: Facebook on Android, Facebook Lite on Android or Facebook on iOS.

How to register for the WhatsApp Business app

Requirements

  • You can only register a mobile phone or a landline (fixed) number that you own.
  • You must be able to receive phone calls or SMS with the phone number you’re trying to register.
  • You must have all call-blocking settings, apps, and task-killers disabled.
  • If you’re registering through your mobile phone, you must have a working internet connection through mobile data or Wi-Fi. If you’re roaming or have a bad connection, registration may not work. Try opening https://www.whatsapp.com/business/ on your mobile phone’s internet browser to see if you’re connected to the internet.
  • If you’re registering through a landline, tap Call me to request a phone call to receive your registration code.

How to register

  1. Enter your phone number:
    • Choose your country from the drop-down list. This will automatically fill in your country code in the box on the left.
    • Enter your phone number in the box on the right. Don’t put a 0 before your phone number.
  2. Tap Done to receive a registration code. If prompted, you can also tap Call me to receive the code through a phone call.
  3. Enter the 6-digit registration code you receive via SMS or phone call.
    • Note: If you have iCloud Keychain enabled and have registered this number before, you may be automatically registered without receiving a new SMS code.

Using extension numbers for landline

Landline extension numbers can’t be used to complete the registration process. Please use a landline number without an extension to register your phone number. For security purposes, we can only send the six-digit registration code to the landline number that you intend to use for your business account.

If you don’t receive the six-digit code through SMS

  • Wait for the progress bar to finish and retry. The wait time may take up to 10 minutes.
  • Don’t guess the code or you’ll be locked out for a period of time.
  • If the timer runs out before you receive the registration code, an option will appear to request a phone call. Choose the Call me option to request the call. When you answer the call, an automated voice will tell you the six-digit registration code. Enter this code into the WhatsApp Business app.
    • Note: Depending on your carrier, you may receive charges for SMS and phone calls.

Troubleshooting steps

If you’re having issues registering, try the following:

  1. Turn your phone off, wait 30 seconds, and turn it back on.
  2. Delete and reinstall the latest version of WhatsApp Business here.
  3. Check your reception by sending a test SMS message from any mobile phone to the mobile phone number you’re trying to register. Enter the mobile phone number exactly as you entered it in the WhatsApp Business app, including the country code.
    • Note: We can’t send your registration code through other methods due to security reasons.
